as we know, pumas take 5w 30 oil, i have a 1.6 and was just wondering, do i have to use 5w 40 for fords or can i use any good quality 5w 40 oil, my car has done 145k miles, thanks

Any Ford spec 5W30 oil should be suitable but at that mileage I'd probably use something that's higher quality.

Mine is pushing 160,000 and will be getting some good oil on its next service.

As for using 5W40 I wouldn't know...

Ford explicitely says that you can use these motor oils:
Recommended 5W30 (Formula E Ford specification WSS-M2C912-A1) -> This oil has been superseeded by Formula F
Alternative (i.e. ok to use):
10W30 (class of ACEA additives A1/B1 or A2/B2 or API SH/CD EC)
5W40 (A3/B3 or API SH/CD EC)
10W40 (A3/B3 or API SH/CD EC)

All oils are good to be used in temperature range from -20C to over 40C)
