does this set it at tdc???
cos i can do that easily with a screwdriver down the plug hole,

You really need the pin otherwise the timing will slip out when you do up the tensioner

There is a specific TDC tool for the puma engine available from SPX...

on reading other posts, yes, rotate clockwise until the pin is struck..

You are correct on both counts, the pin does hold the crank at TDC, but you are also correct in saying you can do it with a screw driver or other depth gauge device to get TDC. Ive also used that method to time an engine. Its more difficult on the puma engine as you tend to rotate the crank a little when tightening it. But if you tighten the crank bolt 1st, then get the crank to TDC with your depth gauge, and then tighten the cams, it will work just fine as long as you are comfortable with doing timing.

Not necessarily true, I've done them before with out any timing equipment
