crank locking pin,
does this set it at tdc???
cos i can do that easily with a screwdriver down the plug hole,

You are correct on both counts, the pin does hold the crank at TDC, but you are also correct in saying you can do it with a screw driver or other depth gauge device to get TDC. Ive also used that method to time an engine. Its more difficult on the puma engine as you tend to rotate the crank a little when tightening it. But if you tighten the crank bolt 1st, then get the crank to TDC with your depth gauge, and then tighten the cams, it will work just fine as long as you are comfortable with doing timing.
 
Yes but I've had occasions where I thought I could get away with it then ended up feeling like a prize idiot trying to start the engine! :-D
 
And I know the feeling when a mechanic does not know what he is doing and lets me drive off to seize the engine! not good!!
