I have just tried to fit some Fli triaxial speakers in the front of the car. They were what I thought was the correct size, 6.5inch.

This is them.

They're too big by a couple of mm. I don't really fancy cutting the whole bigger, though that is an option.

Luckily they came with adapters to make them fit in the back so its not a total waste of money. My question is has anyone got any recommendations for speakers that will definitely fit the front? I don't want any crap brands like Bush or JVC, budget is around £40-50.

Thanks

I Believe JL Audio has a model that fits straight in

Yup, it does. http://intl.jlaudio.com/c2-600x-car-audio-speakers-c2-coaxial-systems-99616

I would point you to a very good guide by Chris http://www.pumapeople.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=103106

Hope it helps

Cheers for reply. I was thinking of sticking with Fli since that what I got in the back but they only do 5.25 inch or 6 inch component. Are JL audio any good? Ive never heard of them.

i have jl audio in my car and they sound great! nice even frequency response. but you should really put some sound killer in the doors to have great sound. otherwise the reflected sound in the doors will play through the cones and sound doorish..

Just a little follow up here. I got the JL audio component speakers. Fitted them this week, put the tweeters in the black bit of trim at the top of the door. I'm satisfied with the quality of them, though I must say i'm not as blown away as i thought i would be. Maybe I need an amp? Next job for me is putting some 6x9's in the back.

You got the medium and high frequencies covered, but you need a subwoofer to get the improve the bass.

Some people place it under the front seats.

If you want to get the full 60W, you would probably need a amp, as most head units provide only 40W per channel.

Not necessarily, but you will need to connect the amp to the head unit, most likely rewiring the stock harness as you can see in this video.

I've done a few installs and I'd say Puma was one of the easiest. Removing rear seat is a doddle, and it's easy to run cables along the side of the doors by the sills. Likewise the dash is pretty basic so easy to get wires in and out of.

If you want to amp the front speakers (or the rears I suppose) you could mount the amp under passenger seat and use a Ford adaptor to ISO harness to get the amp output to the front (or rear) speakers. If it was a 4 channel you could do both I suppose. Would probably need to remove front carpet but that's not a huge job.

In mine I have a sub and amp in the boot but it's removeable should I want to carry stuff in the boot. Unfortunately I've also fitted a strut brace in the rear which gets in the way a little...

The bit I haven't tried is running a 12v cable from the battery through the bulkhead/firewall - I just cheated and ran it under the car into the boot.

I can't remember what size speakers I fitted in the doors, I know they are Alpines, maybe 5" or 5.25". I did have to drill a couple of extra little holes in the door inner for the self-tappers that are holding them on. I think I also used some foam sheet behind them to get a good seal.

Does an amp make it louder or actually improve the sound quality? These jl audio ones are OK but I'm not as blown away as I thought I would be. Want to get the 6x9's into the back and see what it's like from there.

I really don't know the factory head unit specifications but, most likely, it will support up to 4 speakers of 40 W. each, as most aftermarket head units.

Your JL speakers provide 60 W. RMS, so are working at 2/3 of their capacity.

With an adequate amp you would get the 100% of the speakers, and the maximum volume would be higher.

Ok thanks for info. I will get 6x9's for in the back next. If im not happy ill look into amps after that.

check out my project. if you put a couple of 8" in the back on an amp you'll get plenty of bass. original plastic boxes i would avoid. tried with them but they just move around and sound shit.

Have you prepped teh car itself? Have a look here at my build. You can use the plastic boxes, but you have to treat them accoustically to get clean, rattle free bass out of them... And without a good amplifier, you will never get a dynamic sound you want.
