Hi all.
I'm new to the forum here. I've had my puma for a few months, and haven't done a huge amount to it; I don't have a lot of free time to work on it. Ignoring this, today I got myself a nice set of Sierra Cosworth lattice alloys.

In my naivety, I thought that these 7J wheels would sit fine on the studs supporting the previous 6J fan wheels

My problem is this: The wheel studs on all four wheels are not long enough. The wheel will go on, and I can get the nuts to tighten on, but because of the lack of length, they are not on far enough. With the 6J's on, the thread surpasses the top of the nut. With the 7's, it comes about two thirds of the way up, and it's not enough support to be comfortable driving around on them :roll:
What the 6J's thread looks like:

If anyone knows where I may be able to acquire some longer wheel studs for all four wheels I would be greatly appreciative. Another 10mm would be ideal.

Thanks in advance,

Matt

Hi, your pictures don't work :/

First of, i cant se, so I cant be shure, but as far as I know, the with of the rim has nothing to do whit the mounting holes, I have 7.5" rims, and they fitt fine. I'm asuming your not using spacers?

When you say the nuts won't tighten, do you meen that they loosen them selfe as your tightening them? It is posible that your nuts are the wrong type for your new rims.

However, so long as you can do up the nuts, you should be safe and sound :) even thoug the treads do not go all the way trough. So long as there isn't only one thread holding the nut thoug :)

Edit: pictures now work, can't see anything wrong whit that :)

That is exactly what is happening.
There is no spacers no, if their was I could just remove them and there would be plenty of thread :grin: I'd say it is probably enough, but that bit more would be nice. Might try the local ford shop and see if they have any in parts.

:)

You won't find any longer studs at ford :( , your best bet is to have some custom made, unless some rally/racing shop has some that fitt,

But you could ask if they have nuts that are specific to the rims, nuts come whit ddifferent fittments, genneraly ford fits ford, but not aalways :)

I would stil say your ok to drive thoug :)

Personally no way would I drive the car with those on and I bet an MOT tester wouldnt even do an MOT with them like that.

Have you also considered what the offset of the wheels is? one of the Pumas greatest strengths is its handling and the wrong offset could spoil it considerably.

I think the picture may not be very clear but the thread pictures are of the 6J's (standard wheels) :eek: The puma will not be seeing competitive use, but moreso a daily driver. What would be the standard way forward here. I know others have 7" wide wheels with similar offsets. They still fit on the standard studs don't they?

I think you should look into different nuts, before you give up on the wheels... :) take one down to a wheel and tyer suplier, and they might have some that ditt better :)

I'll see what can be done for it tomorrow. I was advised that they would fit, but 7J et40... could stick some spacers in to correct the handling, but the wider wheel means there will be no thread to grip the nuts. I could be s.o.l here but if I can get the nuts on properly then I can live with the wheels sitting further into the arch.

Again, the with of the wheel has nothing to do whit the thread holes. If anything et 40 would give you more thread then the et 36 er whatever is standard.

I have et 15 and the centers are waaay longer then the standard wheels, but stil, they fitt perfectly. I'm stil convinced that you may have the wrong nut for the job :)

Yu may need somethinge like these nuts http://valiantspares.com.au/757-b35-roh-mag-wheel-nuts-5.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

As Cartman said, wheel width/offset is nothing to do with how they fit on the studs.

I had a set of 17" Pro Race 1.2 with an offset of 35. The mating face was thicker than a standard Puma wheel, so therefore the wheel studs looked shorter.

I asked a question on here regarding how much thread ideally we should have in the nut. I got an answer of 'so many turns' but I can't remember how many it was.
I'll search for the thread and find out what the answer was.

I get you on that front, just wondering how badly it will affect the handling now. Seems you are both right with the nut being wrong. Going to get a lend of some sierra cosworth nuts tomorrow to see if they are a better fit, and then I can order myself 16 of them :grin: Feeling like a bit of an idiot, thank you all for your help, I'll let you know what I find tomorrow.

if you do need longer studs there are for sale on ebay, just been looking for a set myself
"Ford extended wheel studs +20mm, Cosworth, Escort, Focus, Fiesta"

Reviving an old post to update;
In the end I did not need to use the longer studs, but I used an older puma nut, as the lattice cossie's nuts didn't fit. Having now been powder-coated and sprayed Black Pearl:

Overall I am very pleased :grin:
