I've found grooved discs to be just the same really

Good idea z. Didn't think about that. I maye stretch to the 16" cozzy wheels. Maybe lol I just want the best for my money that's all. and the best brakes really

If going for Cossie style wheels, make sure you get the 7J ET35, not the 6.5J ET40. With the 7J and a 195/45 tyre, the car should drive pretty much as well as standard. With the 6.5J, it won't. I spent a lot of time and money messing with this, including having a set of wheels refurbished that I only had on the car for about 6 months as I didn't like the way it drove.

Also factor in that good 195/50R15's are noticably cheaper than 195/45R16's.

Much as I love the way the Puma looks with 16" cossie's, if I was doing it over, I would probably have stuck with standard Puma wheels (or possibly another ET34 / ET35 15" wheel) and gone with ST150 or Mondeo V6 calipers.

But if you're driving that hard in a Puma that you need to uprate the brakes, then good luck.

Not ALL the time - but on my usual longer, spirited run back from friends I have noticed fade issues...
So could do with a little more something, that's for sure.

I think that is a touch harsh, I had noticable fade in mine before upgrading (from 258mm). Granted, not very often, but a spirited drive on country roads soon led to a lack of response. I recall with my first one, when I live in a more rural area, that I had the 240mm discs replaced under warranty as they warped so quickly.

Problem now is I so seldom get to drive on that kind of road anymore, but when I do, I am grateful for the fade resistance of larger stoppers.

get mintex extreme pads and discs. uprate to Hel stainless steel braided brake hose and change brake fluid as well as check you have the later version calipers ie the 258mm ones. if that still doesnt help, get the sierra 4 pot brake calipers and fit them on.

ie here

Standard brake fade is terrible! Ford got the handling spot on except the brakes

The reason I want 15s is tyres and I want my car to look standard, props will hide the brakes too which appeals to me. Buyin bigger or alternate wheels will add $$ so its cheaper to make the mondeos fit just more hassle

As fitted to Sierra / Sapphire 2WD Cosworth, you will need a 3mm spacer behind the disc iirc. and will need to enlarge the bolt holes in your hubs (as you would with the Mondeo MkIII's).

Wasn't there some issue with these fouling the inner wheel face of some wheels? Could have made that up.

But didn't you say you were thinking about going for 16" Cossie's? Hence "Buyin bigger or alternate wheels will add $$ so its cheaper to make the mondeos fit just more hassle"

Or am I missing something (not unusual...)?

I said I'd maybe concider them. Just don't want to settle for sommat because its easier. But the impression I'm getting the hasle is worth it

In all honesty, I would stick with 15" wheels, but go for 280mm discs. Will be a big improvement over what you have, and really there would be little difference in performance between those and the 300m Mondeo ones.

I know u have played about a lot with this area so I know ur advice is valuable. Ill have a think but if the difference is minimal 280mm conversion might be better. What exactly do I need out of interest?

Fiesta ST calipers (inc. carriers), discs and pads.

or

Mondeo Mk1/2 2.5/4x4 calipers (inc. carriers), discs and pads, 3mm spacer, new caliper bolts, enlarge holes in knuckle for larger bolts.

The 4 pots shown earlier I think fit in the same way as the Mondeo Mk1/2 2.5/4x4 kit. The Escort/Sapphire 4x4 Cosworth use essentially the same calipers as the Mondeo Mk1/2 V6/4x4.

The Mondeo calipers above should be available for about £50 inc shipping. Fiesta ST typically closer to £100-120.

If you go for the Mondeo ones, try to find out the year of car they came off, as I think the caliper and therefore pad shape changed at some point. Don't pay extra for ST200/ST24, they are the same as any V6/4x4 of that model year.

Its just doing my head in because the 300mm conversion is in theory cheeper to do than the 280mm

Ill see how i feel in week and ive got a full weeks wages to play with ;)

Benking i would go for the 300mm conversion! there just leagues better! They saved me in my puma yesterday when a pug 206 turned into me on the motorway @90mph had to jump on anchors and it shocked me how much stopping power they actually have especally compared to standard brakes!

Calipers should be about the same price, surely the only additional cost is some 3mm spacers, otherwise same cost as 300mm?

I know what your saying but that's if I take the easy option, not the option I ideally want. Need to think because I only want to do this once if you get me

I needed new tyres when I bought my car. Looked on Ebay and found some brand new Toyo T1r's for only £155. The bad thing was they were 16 inch.....the good thing was, they were on alloys which came free with the tyres...lol

The result was.....no mod's needed for my 300mm brake upgrade which cost me less than £100.

In my opinion the BEST £100 I have spent in a very long while. Have saved me many a time when I know the 258mm one's I had would have give up and cost me in car repairs...lol

I still drive now and leave my braking really late as I love the feeling I get from them, they stop the car so quickly without drama it's a buzz.
