It started burning copious amounts of oil a few months after I had it (then again my grandad had been driving it around at 25mph for about 11 years, so not really surprising!)

yeh, mine's v similar to a fiesta zetec-s engine bay, just the airbox is in a different position. I'm wondering whether I could replace the black plastic top with a metal one and then get it powder-coated to brighten the engine bay up. . .

No reason why not and I don't think the engines look too disimilar

Looks virtually the same except the rocker cover and inlet manifold are black on the 1.6, and they're silver on the 1.7. And the 1.7 has a plastic cover over the rocker cover.
