No, just jack and support the front end of the car, remove the wheels and replace drop links.
 
Hardest bit will be getting the old ones off if they've been on for a few years.
You will either need an Allen key, I think it's 6mm, or a thin open ended spanner, can't remember the size probably 17mm.
This is to stop the ball spinning while you get the nut off.
Alternative is a cutting disc :lol:

Depends who tested it.
I've seen one pass with a broken front spring. Couldn't see it but you could hear it when driving.
 
MOT only checks for "excessive" play in suspension components so a slight movement, though enough to knock,will not fail the test

On the bright side...easy job
 
Certainly the first and easiest item to check/replace, not expensive either.
Other causes could be bushes in the arms but normally I think any movement in these would be sufficient to fail any MOT no matter who does it.
My suggestion would be do the drop links first anyway
