Want to try and find a few little bits and bobs for my Puma and thought about ringing round a few scarp yards that we have local and seeing if they have any Puma's!

Thing is I have never been to one before :? and so I was wondering if someone would explain how they work? Do you find a car take of what you need/want and then they give you a price?

Kind of excited at the thought of going to one and stripping of the bits I want but nervous at the same time LOL

A few years back you could wander round them yourself and remove anything you wanted. Now because of health and safety, it's very unlikely you'll get access - chances are you'll have to tell the staff what you want and they'll find it for you.

Theres one round mine that still lets you wander. Some do, the scruffier you look the better i reckon, less chance your some sort of undercover government man!

I used to love wandering round scrapyards getting bits for my old Escort (usually bits from a higher spec model, as I only had the boggo 'L' spec :()

Theres still a couple up here that let you wander around, take stuff and pay for it.. or if its small enough pocket it ;) lol, been meaning to go 4 a while now but havent got round to it..

as Neil says though theres quite a few now that wont let you go in and wander

The problem with the puma is the parts are more valuable to a scrap yard than say a fez, escort etc.

There are less scrap yards that let you walk round, there arent that many pumas in them and because of there parts value you will often find them on there own somewhere not with the rest of the tat. You will be suprised how many of them will charge you more for a puma parts thats identicle to a fez from my experince, so generaly its best to know if a part you need can be taken off another car

mine charges a pound to wander about by the cars! (think to recover of those pocketed bits!) lol

sadly so many scrappies are money making breakers nowadays, with any 'good' stuff re sold to profit, anything else deemed unsafe by health & safety..whole cars for sale with a Cat rating even... I make a list then ring round the few near me, but its worth getting friendly with a breaker (I get the odd freebie, named partworn tyres (Toyo's!) and odd & ends like gear knobs and indicator stalks! Happy scrap scrabbling!

i have 4 scrap yards near me that let you go in they just have the signes up basicly saying hurt your self and tough you cant claim.
i think i've only ever seen 1 puma in any of them and that was burnt out.

i usual ask how much first, as you dont want to spend ages taking a part off to then find out there charging you almost what the part would be new.
