I'm not surprised mate. I needed to buy something within my price range, and pretty quick. I looked over it with the best knowledge and experience I had.
But now, thanks to Richard, I know where the rust sits and certainly know where to look next time. Even if I go round jacking up every one I look at!
Seems that with some of these cars, you buy the rust and get the rest of the Puma free!

I've no regrets buying this car though. It has, and still will be, fun throwing it around right up to the end.

But hey, onwards and upwards!

I've already started buying parts for the next project. Found something at a good price which I couldn't resist.

Over the last week I have been looking at cheap pumas with low mileages for the Puma Cup car. I have come across a few that are closer to you than me with 50k on the clocks if you are interested in the links.

A decision has been made.... I'll be keeping the Puma and sorting out its rust issues in the summer next year when I've got another car to use, and can take the Puma off the road.

In the mean time, I'm going to enjoy driving it around while I'm gathering parts for a turbo conversion.

Ordered the intercooler and pipe work today and in the process of measuring up for any reducers I may need.

Ups and downs here!
:pinkeye:

If I get rid of this one and buy another, that too will have rust issues at some point, so I may as well keep this one and sort it out.

Got a little bit done today:

I couldn't get the bumper off as the small bolts on the outer ends were rusted and rounded. The area was too tight to get anything else in there to remove them. So I mounted the intercooler slightly differently to how I wanted. But it's solid and doesn't move.

I had contemplated painting the intercooler black to make it less obvious. I wish I did now it's fitted.

I'm going to put the grille back on instead, but that needs a little 'modification'

Thanks.

If you had seen what it was like while I was out there with a hacksaw and a Stanley knife, you wouldn't have said it was tidy!

Turbo not going in yet. Last night I ordered all the reducers etc. for fitting to the MAF, throttle body etc. so when they arrive, I will only have the pipe work & fittings and the turbo. I also ordered a holder for the gauges.
Got a replacement exhaust manifold which I've painted up ready (in my other thread). I've found out my brother has a lathe, so the manifold and a gasket for the turbo will be sent to him so he can make me a flange.

I still need to order everything else, but I'm going to be getting the parts first which I can install ready. The only things left to do then would be put the turbo & manifold on along with the oil lines, plumb in the intercooler and all the pipe work and any other little bits I can do before.
Will also be getting the proper pipe clips/clamps as I hate those damn jubilee clips.

How did you fix the inter cooler in the end? I did that the same way before but I welded on three brackets to the cross member. Looks good though. I wouldn't worry about not painting it as it never lasts, the black always chips off with debris flying at it. If you can still fit the grilled hen happy days really.

The gauge holder arrived this morning.
It is supposed to fit in a standard single din stereo hole, but when I tried fitting it, it was too long.

Not only was it too long, it was also too 'thick' to seat flush with the surround. Didn't look very tidy at all. So, I started making some modifications. I removed the inner lip from the stereo surround so the gauge holder would fit inside.

View media item 4659
I cut a small amount of each end of the gauge holder so it would totally fit inside the surround. I bent the gauge holders retaining clips over so I could use them to position it inside the surround at the angle I wanted.

Trial fitted it the car to see what sort of angle the gauges will be sitting at.

Will make up some fibreglass filler to put along the back to hold the gauge holder in, then will be spraying it all silver.

No radio!

I got the dremel out this afternoon to have a go at getting the lower grille to fit.
I've had to cut so much off the outer ends, they have lost their structure and are now free to flop & wobble around in the wind.

The grill won't be going back on. If I had a narrower intercooler with smaller pipe work, I think I could have done it.

That was my question: it seems to me you are using something with a core depth of 6 cms, don't you? I am in planning stage and look for a vivaro or frontera intercooler; they are 4 cms core, IIRC… And that should fit behind that grill
