I'm looking at getting a track car to have some fun with. It's something I've always wanted to get into being a petrol head, but I also don't feel comfortable pushing a car public roads like I did when I was young and foolish.

I'm primarily looking at Mk1 MX5s and Pumas. Except for perhaps a cold air feed and fanimold, the engine will be kept largely standard until I sort out the handling and braking and feel comfortable with the car, so with regards to modifications it will be coilovers, poly bushes, adjustable bits, strut bars, 16" wheels, larger brakes and otherwise fully stripped out with buckets and harnesses and at some point a roll cage etc.

Despite the lack of 'power' performance mods, I'm expecting many insurance companies to take a dim view of the mods as it will show me to be driving like a lunatic on the roads. Far from the truth and as I said the reason for this is so I can drive like a lunatic safely and where it's allowed. The only reason I want the car road legal is to drive it to and from track days and competitions as I don't have a method of towing/transporting the car.

With this in mind, can anyone recommend an insurance company that will be kind and possibly understanding. I doubt admiral will be too happy and my no claims is tied up in the family cars so can't even rely on that to bring it down. I'm not expecting it to be dirt cheap, but if there a specialist that will understand it will barely be driven on the road and is dedicated for the track, I might have half a chance.

Any one know of any?

Hi,

Adrian Flux are a specialist for performance and modified cars. As an example I rang them when ScubaSteve sold his car and with everything declared third Part it was £1800 and Fully comp was over £3000 but I am 19 with only 1 years NCB, I was pleasantly surprised by the quote when everyone else was refusing to give me a price. Also I was told if I was 20 it would be significantly cheaper.

There are a couple of other people like Adrian Flux but I cant think of there names right now.

Hi,
Please feel free to give us a try if you like. If you wanted to PM me your details I'd be happy to arrange for one of my quotes team to give you a call back.
Regards,
Dan.

im also with adrian flux, i was very lazy and went on confused.com to get a rough idea who would be cheapest, flux quoted me £900+ all mods declared (supercharger, exhuast, suspension, brakes, stripped interior) but then contacted me afterwards and ended up getting insured for £560 FC, all mods declared, with key cover and trackday cover.im 27, no claims or convictions, and the cars regestered at fairly high risk postcode. i recently spoke to my old insurance company to get my proof of no claims and found out i had 6 years instead of 5 years that i thought i had, and flux are going to refund me £30something. very very good i thought, i was expecting to pay much more.

Also try http://www.reis.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and http://www.competition-car-insurance.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

No way I'd be paying a grand to insure a track car, get a lovely trailer for that, and the following year, you don't have to buy it again

Flux won't touch me anyway, I always try but a 200 brake Astra in the high tax band isn't performance enough for them, neither are either of my 4 litre Land Rovers.

Plus most garages in the L postcode don't have a 3mm plate door so the risk profile is up the wall.

Trailer it. With the added bonus that when you bend it you're still getting home and going to work in the morning.

If the track car is a 'second' car, check out Admiral's Multicar.

Awesome pricing, good product.

There are a few mod/track friendly unsurers: Adrian Flux, Greenlight, Sky. None will show on comparison sites, either, so you need to contact direct.
