* Name still TBC :twisted:

Well i figured it's about time to make a project thread as it's about to get serious!

Bought my lovely little 1.7 Puma a couple months back now and haven't regretted anything since! Been a very reliable runner and amazing fun to drive.

So far the mods i have completed so far are:

>Ford Escort Mk6 RS2000 Alloys (ET41)
>FK 10mm Wheel Spacers
>K&N Cone Filter
>Piper Full stainless Exhaust inc. FRP Sports cat.
>Painted Engine cover Panther black with silver lettering.

Here is a picture from the latest meet for us southerners in all it's glory!

(And before anyone says anything - yes my backbox is just about big enough ;))

Now - on my to-do list.

>KW sports suspension kit
>Eaton M45 4th/5th gen supercharger from a Mini Cooper S / JCW!

Now the sports shocks wont be a challenge but the S/C will :)

I have most of the info in my thread in the "Under the hood" section but the long and short is i intend to supercharge the Puma up to/around 200bhp on a bit of a budget. I am not going to skimp where it matters. If i have to uprate the internals then i will do so.

This car is intended to be turned into a track toy but also road legal for getting it to meets/track days and so on. More info as it comes ;)

Just a brief update after i had a chat with Omex tech support.

Hi James

The 600 ECU has the ability to control ON / OFF cam controls, where as for continuously variable cams, the 710 is required. Quite often, on continuously variable systems, especially those that do not move the cams through very great angles, it is perfectly acceptable to just move them with ON/OFF controls. Attached is a magazine article about fitting an Omex 600 to one of these engines. Sorry for the attachments being so large but it’s the only way you can still read the print!

Quite often such large attachments just bounce so I will send this email again without the attachments.

Best regards

Omex Technology

Very helpful indeed :) I had been led to believe that Omex would not support VCT however it does :) Obviously engine management like this is expensive but i do know a professional mapper who can help bring out the best in the car!

Also these were the images he mentioned - i can send anyone the originals as they are quite large and the text os sort of small and can be hard to read!

Well unfortunately this is being called off as I have had a change of heart. I am likely going to be selling the Puma (which i will dearly miss) and getting myself a Ford Ka. It will be stripped and caged and basically race prepped for not alot of money and this weekend i am picking up an Escort RS Turbo Engine (CVH 1.6 w/ Garrett T3). In other words 200bhp @ 1bar in a car that weighs just over 800kg :)

I may have a potential sale on the Puma but if not i'll be putting up an ad here first to see if anyone is interested.

sorry to hear your getting rid of the puma mate, not a fan of the Ford Ka myself but hope your happy when your get it!

I know lol - My brother put it to me as the Ka weighs something like 850Kgs as standard and it's all about power to weight! I had one as my first car and it was fine to drive but the 1.3 was shocking to say the very least! The accelerator pedal may as well just be volume control! Plus the CVH as standard can hit 200bhp and take it without issue - with the 1.7 i'm not sure what it would be like F/I.

I wasn't keen on the driving position in the KA. My brothers girlfriend has one and I found it somewhat strange.
But if you get on with it then that's what matters!

This Turbo KA is 180 BHP

That's the sort of thing i'm going for! Though it will be caged etc. Picked up the 1600CVH for £122 :D bargain. needs a turbo rebuild but the kits go cheap enough on ebay (£70)

We will have bucket seats installed and sort of customised as we are both in the realms of 6"4!

i have a small obsession with doing a KA up as it was my first car!

awesome little things!

like you said its all about weight and the price is much better on a KA.

I love the puma but being a coupe it is bloody expensive!

Too right. I can buy a slightly beat up Ka for peanuts. I'm hoping to keep it lower than £400. I also got a quote with Adrian Flux on the modded Ka setup - 1000 miles a year (driving to and from tracks) TPFT = £500/year! it's only a provisional one and i need to phone to confirm so it could either rise or lower but i'm not sure how much they can alter it. I do really enjoy driving the Puma it's a right hoot but for track shenanigans the Ka will be *that* much faster for much less money.

yeh exactly.

me and my mate are hoping to enter a road rally and was going to do it with a puma but a wing for a puma is £65+ give or take a good bargin on ebay etc but thats the average I have found. A KA or Fez can be picked up for £20 from scrappy and I spend a lot of my time there. If a puma comes in then its a rare occasion and they are stripped before being let onto the yard.

KA or Fiesta is a wise choice!

Thats actually on the pricey side for a CVH. Sounds like a good project though. Would be good of you to keep a build thread on here of it. My mate had a 1.7 Puma engined KA. Was rapid!

It was the cheapest going as far as i could see :( never mind. Yeah i'll keep wandering back here and let you know how it gets on! there's a couple of 1.7 engined Ka's in the owners club i'm looking at and it would be a good laugh i reckon!

Ive also been looking at doing sumthing similar but i was going to go down the extreme route of fitting a focus ST engine in a spaceframe chassis in the back! rear wheel drive 300bhp with bags of torque in a car that weighs the same as a slipper! I bit of nod to the good old days of group B rally cars!!!!

Haha mad :) It's going to be an interesting car - very sleeper style but plenty of power to outrun a lot of much faster cars! People have put in the Duratec RS but you need to cut bits of slam panel to make the exhaust cam fit! not a very big bay to work with in the first place but it will fit :D

Ive got loads of crazy ideas now my new garage is built, im tempted to go down that route! the engine would be the biggest cost, fabrication and parts then sadly the car would probably be the cheapest!!!
